There’s no explanation needed for why New York City is one of the GREATEST cities in the world. I visited recently, and spent some time at one of the newest (and most photogenic) architecture hubs within the city – the World Trade Center. For this post, I’ll give some fun facts about One World Trade Center, a.k.a. Freedom Tower.
Name: One World Trade Center
Architect: SOM – Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill
Height: 1,776 feet / 104 stories / the TALLEST building in the Western Hemisphere
Date Opened: October 2014
Located on the site of the twin towers, this building is already a national icon. The cubic base from which the tower rises has the same footprint of the Twin Towers (204’ x 204’). This podium consists of four thousand 13 feet by 2 feet glass panels positioned at varying angles, specifically designed for the ventilation of the mechanical levels behind the heavily reinforced concrete walls. The tower above is transformed into eight, tall, isosceles triangles by chamfering the square edges of the base. At its center, it forms a perfect octagon in plan. From the vantage point of the ground, the vanishing point of the tower makes it seem like it reaches into the sky to infinity (and beyond!!), serving as a beacon of hope for the future on grounds marred by tragedy. The more you know… :) #iliketakingpictures #iheartny #archinerd
